Dating from around the turn of the 18th/19th Century, they were produced in Dieppe, France, a centre of expertise in the carving of fine ivory objects including many needlework tools. Dieppe was also a fishing port and the male and female figures are wearing traditional dress of the period and each clutching a fish in their right hands.
Examples of Dieppe Fisher Folk are hard to find and this matching pair are nicely carved and in perfect condition.
